On my latest 2006 lighthouse expedition, I activated this lighthouse on Saturday September 19th. 2006 for the International Lighthouse & Lightship Weekend Event, while I was transmitting, the Royal Navy Rescue helicopter crew were holding an exorcise with a number of local Coastguard teams who were abseiling down the very steep cliff walls on which the Mull of Galloway lighthouse stands. I was transmitting for 5 hours and made 220 contacts, a sharp contrast to my 2nd. day ( Sunday 20th.) activating Port Logan lighthouse, 40 contacts in 5 hours.
The lighthouse is open to the public ,(a small charge is made) and after climbing the spiral staircases 115 steps to the lamproom I received a Certificate. From the lamproom in good weather conditions wonderful views of Ireland, Isle of Man and this part of the South West coast of Scotland.
The MULL of GALLOWAY lighthouse is located on the South West coast of Scotland about 19miles / 30Km south of the sea port of STRANRAER and 5miles/8Kms from the village of DRUMMORE along a single track road. The lighthouse is open to visitors also there is a Visitors Centre, Cafe and Parking Area.
The light was established 1830,Engineer Robert Stevenson, height of tower 84feet/26meters, nominal range 28 nautical miles.
The lighthouse has a walled garden where the lighthouse keepers and their families grew their own vegetables also keep chickens, sheep and a horse for transporting provisions from the boat landing area to the lighthouse.
Within 30miles/48Kms driving of MULL of GALLOWAY lighthouse the follows lighthouses can be visited: PORT LOGAN, PORT PATRICK, KILLANTRINGAN , CORSEWALL POINT and CAIRN RYAN POINT. Photographs for these lighthouses can be seen on my website.
